Fish waste is a free resource , the only cost in this recipe is the cost of the jaggery or gur which varies from Rs 50 to Rs 70 per kg in the city . Bones or crusty waste that gives phosphorus and calcium : fish bones , fish head , prawn shell and heads , fish scales . Equal parts of jaggery or gur and fish waste ( equal parts of soft and bone waste ) are put in a container with a proper lid taking care to leave the container 1/4 th empty for gases , container lid needs to be opened daily for 7 to 10 days after which the container is left alone in a cool dark place for at least 2 months , mine was sitting for almost 10 months ( there were no maggots or any other larvae in the pickle ) . Surprisingly there is no smell of fish , either fresh or rotting during the entire process , so it is easy for me to use , even with cats at home , they do not try to dig out the soil in the containers thinking there is fish in there !!
